Update:

The Vermont Legislature has formally adjourned for 2011 and thanks in part to the actions of concerned citizens in Vermont, was only able to garner enough support to increase the state cigarette excise tax by $0.38/pack rather than the proposed $1.00/pack. Adult smokers are to be commended for their efforts and for speaking out in opposition against higher taxes that unfairly target adult smokers. Governor Shumlin also played a significant role with his steadfast opposition to higher tobacco taxes.

Effective 07/01/2011, the state cigarette excise tax in Vermont increases to $2.62/pack.
